my journey with loona

i found loona in february 2018 when i was abt 15 yrs old, in between gowon and hyeju's debuts. i remember binging all of the loona tvs at the time in the car ride on the way to visit my family in florida, which is a long way from nebraska (lol). i remember falling in love with each of the members that day and listening to their whole discography on repeat. i was there for yyxys debut and was right there with all the theorybits writing thinkpieces on what heejins appearance in the egoist mv could possible mean. i was there for when favorite was released, and then hi high and eventually butterfly. loona was the first gorup i truly fell in love with and i'll forever hold them in my heart. when they went on tour in 2022, you bet i was in that ticketmaster queue securing pit even thoguh i hadnt really kept up with kpop since 2020. when i refound kpop because of their tour in 2022, i found my way home. i had been so lost for those two years, not really havinga space for myself, just trying to fit into spaces i thought i should be in. returning home to kpop was the best choice of my life, even if it meant i was that much more devastated when chuu left in november of that year. i ended up getting a loona tattoo to commemorate the mark they left on me, 12 butterflies in each members color wrapping around my entire forearm. even if i knew how everything would end up, i would do it again in 100 lifetimes.

group profile

loona started as a predebut project with the solo debut of heejin, the 1st member, in october 2016. from there, they periodically released the identities and then solos of each member, refered to as the "girl of the month" project (a reference to their name in korean) or the "whos next girl project" (a reference to the text on the teaser images). each member was announced, and then released a solo song and a bside, alongside a music video. their music videos featured heavy lore and even its own universe, sometimes coined the "loonaverse". after a certain number of members were announed, a sub-unit would debut of those members (with some exceptions). 4 of the first 5 members formed loona 1/3, the next 3 were loona odd eye circle, and the next was loona yyxy. each member also recieved a representative color and animal. after announcing all of the members and subunits, which would take nearly two years, the full 12 member group debuted in 2018 with the title track "hi high" off their debut ep "++". however, in november 2022, it was announed that the 10th member of the group, chuu, would be leaving the group due to disagreements with the company. what followed was a years long legal battle where all 12 members fought from freedom from the company, BBC, with allegations of camera monitoring, severe dieting, and just straight up abuse lodged at the company. all members eventually earned their freedom and have since debuted in post-debut projects. 5 members joined MODHAUS, a company ran by the former creative director of loona who also split from BBC years before chuu's departure. they have since debuted as the group artms, with offshoots such ass a remake of loona odd eye circle with the original members, and heejin and hasuels solo projects. yves and chuu went on to become solo artsits with thriving careers and multiple world tours. the 5 remaining members joined CTD entertainment and formed the group loossemble, or loona assemble. they had 3 releases before disbanding in november of 2024. hyunjin of loossmble has since joined other projects, such as tdya, a 4 member project group. yeojin has also released music on her own after loossemble. lossemble had the intention of finding a new company however the members have since indicated that that will not be possible as of right now. loona has many achievements, such as being responsible for the "stan___" phenomenon in internet culture, the phenomenon of "loonacon" (kcon 2019), and more.

the boycott

because the nature of the company loona was formerly under, all consumption of loona files should be illegal to prevent the company from benefiting from the work of the loona members. i personally upload all of the files as local files on spotify, by simply putting the mp3 files in the "spotify" album in my phone files. all loona songs released during their inital run from 2016-2022 can be found in the loona google drive, found here. i also have an archive on my site of all of their mvs with a video player and a link to download the files here. right now, fans continue to boycott because BBC will periodically pop back up with a lawsuit against the girls and we don't want to be contributing to that by streaming the original files
